From the author: After seeing that it might be a good night for Aurora, I stepped outside to see and there were some bright areas. I drove to a dark spot and started photographing around 1:30am. The city lights illuminated some scattered cloud.

During the night of 5/6th of November 2001, in Valkeakoski, Finland, the sky burned in red...almost completely and only red. Just picture you are walking through a forest on a "dark" November night and the trees are silhuetted against a red sky everywhere you look.

Cool picture from outer space showing some aurora activity.
CORRECTION: This is actually an image of the Sun. And as far as we all know, there are no auroras in the Sun :-)

From the author: Around 4 AM the weather finally was clear and the northern lights were kicking into high gear, probably the best show I have seen in 10 years. At some times I had trouble figuring out where to point the camera for the next shot since it looked like in the photo almost everywhere you looked.

75 to 115 miles northeast of Anchorage, Alaska. Nov.06
The northern lights over the cabin were taken at Sheep Mountain Lodge. It was a nice intense aurora that stayed active much of the evening. Photo copyrighted by the author, Calvin Hall. Click on link to see original.
