Aurora and volcano
Most photographers would be happy photographing either the spectacular auroras or the the volcanic eruption in Mt. Hekla. Photographer Sigurdur H. Stefnisson got both.

Cool picture from outer space showing some aurora activity.
CORRECTION: This is actually an image of the Sun. And as far as we all know, there are no auroras in the Sun :-)

During the night of 5/6th of November 2001, in Valkeakoski, Finland, the sky burned in red...almost completely and only red. Just picture you are walking through a forest on a "dark" November night and the trees are silhuetted against a red sky everywhere you look.

Tips to take photos of auroras
Yes it could happen. You're witnessing an amazing aurora sight. You hurry up and get your fancy digital camera out of your pocket, shoot, and oops! You've got nothing at all.
I've read many hints for taking pictures of auroras, but this article is quite interesting, from someone who's been photographing the aurora for the last 17 years.
